Dennis Gerald Smith enlisted in the Marine Corps on October 7, 1968. He served an inactive service from October 7 to December 26, 1968. During that time, he was trained to be a rifleman for the Marines.
Dennis served with the CAP 3-3-6, CACO 3-3, 3rd CAG, III MAF.
The Combined Action Program (CAP) placed a thirteen- member Marine rifle squad in rural Vietnamese village; however, by July of 1969, there where only 10 CAPs left. The Third Marine Amphibious Force's (III MAF) purpose was to be a self-contained fighting force.

When he got to Vietnam, Dennis was involved in the Summer-Fall 1969 campaign and the Winter-Spring 1970 campaign. These campaigns were set up in order to protect the pacification program in South Vietnam. In the Summer-Fall 1969 campaign, there was a withdrawal of about 37,900 troops from Vietnam.
